I got to know Pat well over the last year and visited him just about every day he was at hospice. We had wonderful conversations about his life. He told me all about his remarkable AA journey which he was involved in for nearly 50 years and reflected on what an accomplishment that was. He also told me all about his beloved dog Max and how disobedient he was when he first got him, explaining how Max ate two perfectly cooked steaks off a table when Pat walked out of the room for a minute. Eventually Pat trained Max to wait up to 10 minutes with a steak in his dish. I have a hard time believing this since Max lives with me now and ate my father's dirty napkin off the table recently lol ... kidding. Max and Pat were best friends until the end. Listening to Pat talk about his granddaughter Andrea was the highlight of our chats. He loved her dearly and told me all about how she snuck into his heart as a baby. He bought a camper so they could travel, he watched every Scooby-Do movie with her, and he helped her any way he possibly could. He told me his favourite thing about Andrea was that she loves to help people and she isn't motivated by money. She is currently finishing her master's degree in social work and Pat loved knowing she was on a path to help people, especially kids. Pat was the first person in Andrea's family she introduced me to many years ago because they had a special bond. I am so proud of Andrea and her ability to step up and help Pat so much in his final stage of life. It wasn't easy to juggle Pat's declining health and school while living in Ottawa but she did an amazing job and spoke with Pat every day and travelled back when necessary. She held his hand during his final breath, a special moment for both of them. I have nothing but love for Pat, Andrea and their families during this sad time. Glad to know Pat is no longer suffering. Rest in peace, buddy! P.S. I attached some pictures of Max for you all to enjoy!
